I just purchased a laptop as an entry level HTPC.  It's a little Asus Eee that supposedly does full HD 1080p.

I've tried it on music and lower resolution files with my receiver (Onkyo NR) and TV (Bravia) and I am very happy, but I am having a lot of trouble finding anywhere I cana legally download something (anything!) in full HD to test.

Any suggestions welcome ...

(note streaming is not an option, due to poor and highly variable broadband speeds where I live).

As far as I can tell everything on here is legal, movie trailers and the like.

It's not quite downloading, but cheapie USB tuner sticks are available (circa $60) that should let you record material in 1080i off Freeview if you are in a terrestrial coverage area.

There are links to DVB-T content in the Freeview forum on GZ so that would save having to get hold of a tuner to test.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Thanks all.  Managed to find the HD section of iTunes and download a movie overnight 3GB = 5 hours on telecom's 'broadband'  to download.  I don't think I'll repeat but now I have something to test my laptop with.

So far I can only get the file to play in iTunes (it scans through the chapters in XMBC), but researching, as XMBC seems to give better sound and picture quality than windows or iTunes in my subjective testing so far.

Hmm that download speed was pretty bad. I managed to stream off iTunes a 720p movie while watching it. It was about 5gb. My broadband speed is only 4.5mbps.

Of and your video won play in xbmc. It's drm'd do only itunes will play it. Even xbmc on an apple tv that can play iTunes content will not be able to play the same drm'd video.
