I'm interested in knowing what device I would need (available in New Zealand, online) , to record HD content to my laptop.

I want to be able to plug my MySky decoder into the device, and record some HD sport, do some editing, then I could then burn to Blu-Ray.

How fast would my laptop need to be? it has 8GB ram, quad core i7, full HD display (so it can at least play full HD content..)

Is this possible to achieve, or would I need a desktop computer to install PCI cards?

Hauppauge HD PVR is the best option. It allows to to record in H.264 from component video sources.

You also won't be able to record most Sky channels as they use copy protection on the video output.

Or you could just get a decent receiver like Vu+ which saves recordings as a .TS file and FTP them to your laptop.

I have NO problem recording ANY Sky channel.

I'm assuming you're recording SD output from a box using composite into a tuner card that ignores the Macrovision.

Unfortunately trying to record component output is another story, and the HD PVR will respect the copy protection.

On a genuine MySky box, HD output via Component is disabled, all you get is SD.

For this reason, MySky sits in the cupboard while I use its Smart Card in a third party receiver which lets me use HD over Component and much much more...

Oops sorry, I forgot about that. Last time I looked you could get HD component of some channels.

Do capture HDMI you'll need a Black Magic HDMI capture card and a HD Fury to strip the HDCP. You should be able to get the gear here for around NZ$700 or so last time I looked for a project.

It's about the same price or maybe a little cheaper to buy a decent Satellite Receiver and relegate MySky to the cupboard as I have done.

Not quite. The HDFury takes HDMI in and spits out HD video over component - so a capture card with HDMI input wouldn't work with it. On the other hand, paired with the Hauppauge HD PVR, it should work just dandy.

Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried this, but have researched it as part of my planned HTPC build.

I use a HDPVR and record 720p & 1080i sports @ 13.5 Mbps, and the quality is great.
All of the non-HD channels record in their up-sampled 1080i format, as I have my MySky set to fixed output.

Not sure what device you mean.
Sbiddle talks of the HDPVR, which is what I am using to record 720p & 1080i

Most of the Sky channels are not broadcast in HD, but with the MySky Box set to 1080i fixed output, it upsamples them and the HDPVR records them at that resoluton.

All of the channels which are broadcast in HD, I can record as such
(I use a seperate DVB-T card to record the freeview HD stuff, as I can record multiple channels, not crippled in output like the MySky box)

EDIT: I am guessing you must have meant the HDFury.
Contemplated getting one of these, but I have no need as the only channels which are crippled are FreeviewHD, and I already get them in HD via DVB.
I don't have movies or Soho, so no channels to record in "actual 1080i" (except sports, which are not downsampled)

Off Topic - what is the interface of the Vu+ like?
Is it as quick as the MySky box? (I wouldn't use it for playing media, but maybe to stream to another room) and the interface would have to be as easy to use as the current one to get wife approval.

I've wanted one for a while, but they seem expensive and now it seems hard to get.

Recording TV has become been a minefield.

Some may remember the old days of the vcr . Very easy to record whatever you want. And, you could throw a copy to your mates to watch too.

But, the broadcasters are now intent on driving people to piracy. I admit to downloading stuff because it was simply too difficult to get legally.
