Hi team geekzone,

I'm considering adding an additional 8GB of Ram to my single seat HTPC to run a ramdisk for the timeshift buffer. I understand how to set it up etc, but I have a question regarding the number of files or space required to make it all work vs the number of tuners.

I guess a basic question, on a single seat setup does Mediaportal create timeshift buffers for ALL tuners in use, even those directly recording, i.e. 2 tuners, one watching and one recording would both require timeshift buffers and would compete with the values in the timeshift settings in TV server; OR does it only need a buffer for the live TV tuner and the other tuner records directly to the hard disc?

Secondly, on a multi-seat setup does the server still require timeshift buffers per tuner OR does it pass the TS stream directly to the client and the client runs the buffer? How does this work with timesteps or ff/rw on server/client setups?

Any help would be good.

Chris

Hi Chris

I guess a basic question, on a single seat setup does Mediaportal create timeshift buffers for ALL tuners in use, even those directly recording, i.e. 2 tuners, one watching and one recording would both require timeshift buffers and would compete with the values in the timeshift settings in TV server; OR does it only need a buffer for the live TV tuner and the other tuner records directly to the hard disc?

Buffers are only used for the live TV tuner(s); recording goes straight to HDD/file (assuming you configure the recording path to HDD). I think live TV tuners share the buffer space, but could be wrong on that so don't quote me.

Secondly, on a multi-seat setup does the server still require timeshift buffers per tuner OR does it pass the TS stream directly to the client and the client runs the buffer?

Timeshifting is still done on the server, and I believe (could be wrong) that the buffer is shared between clients (ie. not one buffer per client per tuner).

How does this work with timesteps or ff/rw on server/client setups?

I actually don't know a lot about FF/RW. I do know that the client side is the limitation, and I remember reading about what the actual cause is somewhere. I'll see if I can find some info...

Okay, the first post on page two of this thread has a brief technical explanation:
http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/threads/fast-forward-n-backward-recorded-tv.78305/page-2

So basically the problem seems to be to do with audio. When you have a chip in an STB it probably has dedicated handling for FF/RW - software is different. You wouldn't believe how quirky DirectShow and BDA can be at times.
