I have a Samsung LED UA32F TV.

External drive is a Toshiba 1TB USB 3.0. Loaded to about 800GB with movies etc.

My TV handled a 8GB flashdrive no probs but when I use the 1TB external USB drive it takes ages to read scroll thru the list of movies on there, takes forever to even adjust the volume... real pain.

Is there a way of speeding this up please?

+1 on a dedicated media player.

Relatively cheap and typically much, much better. Smart TVs seem to be universally bad at handling this sort of thing - generally underpowered, with poor hardware/codec compatibility.

Something like ASUS OPlay MINI Media Player - Compact Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Channel surround and full HD 1080p with 4-in-1 Card Reader HDMI Interface

?

So the 1TB HDD I have plugs into this Media Player then into the TV yeah?

Yep the Asus unit is good. I have one, as well as an Apacer (couple years old) and WD Live. WD Live is the nicest but it also costs twice the price.

An HTPC (laptop or otherwise) is good, once you use XBMC you will never go back to anything less.

Toshisba Pavilion with 1TB drive into that and HDMI lead to TV worked a treat.

Only thing it turns itself off when I shut the screen, must be a way around that.

Raspberry Pi with RaspBMC loaded. I have about 11tb worth of content and it handles it fine via the network, sure it'll handle it better directly connected.

I wouldn't recommend Raspberry Pi for a novice (don't know stoneddog's level of experience). When I tried it I found it too unstable to be the main media playing unit. The wife would get furious. Admittedly that was in 2012 so maybe it is more stable now.

Things have changed in the last 2 years. I have 2 of them here and have not honestly found anything better for that pricepoint.

+1 for raspberry pi.
I have one running plex client which has passed the wife test using a Logitech wireless jab keyboard.
.
Also another pi running xbmc installed a fortnight ago to play with . Both running files of NAS box.

Thinking of getting basic htpc so I can run VPN and iPlayer desktop client + Netflix.
