So ive been looking at the UHD TVs but dont understand people buying them when we dont have any content for them. Or do we?

If I had the income to afford a UHD TV I'd get one, they are really amazing when you see them up close. Imagine having a gaming rig hooked up. That said I would be weary about buying a UHD TV so soon as there may be standards that are announced that will render your TV almost useless in 4 years (eg a new HDMI spec, or new format encryption to replace HDCP)

I understand (somewhat) the shops want to push UHD out now and to get people to buy the "latest and greatest". But lack of content to warrant that resolution is one big reason to not pay a premium to get a UHD-TV now. Another is how poor SD transmissions look on a TV like that.

Also, if you are not going to get 65 inches or more - you are never going to see the difference between a good HD and a good UHD-TV unless you are going to be sitting 10 cm away from it (given normal eyesight)

No. not yet. I have a 4 year old 50" plasma and am very tempted to get a 65" full HD plasma but then I thought ... neh ... wait till UHD tvs get cheaper ...

so I'm buying expensive cameras and headphones instead! (face palm)

As far as I know there are no UHD transmissions so no benefit there, don't know about blueray if it supports UHD??

do geeks every buy things based on practicality? ever heard of how practical a holden V8 is compared to a Toyota? why has no one done a study on that?

I'm saving my '4k' money and putting it towards a new PC with Oculus Rift. A much better investment I think.

Nope, there's currently absolutely zero 4K content, unless you're making your own or watching the demos. The Blu-ray standard for 4K content is still being drafted and will likely use quad-layer discs and require brand new players.

As the image posted above says, buying a 4K TV now is a complete waste of money. You're best to wait until there's actual content) if ever) and the prices should be lower by then too. 4K TVs are simply the TV manufacturers adding yet another gimmick to try and get people to buy a new TV that they don't really need.

Really the only content available soon that will be in 4k will be the new phones that can record video in 4k.

I simply wouldn't purchase a new tv quite now. I wouldn't want to buy a good 1080p tv and then for 4k content to become more widely available next year and not be able to see it. So I'd just wait for 4k tvs to become cheaper next year when the standard has become more common and get one then.

the only use I can think of for a UHD TV currently is if your using it for a high end PC setup.

The problem with that is that you need HDMI 2.0 ports on both your computer and the tv otherwise the signal will be at 30fps which isn't good enough for gaming

I have (well had) a Samsung 65 4K TV and agree with what everyone is saying about the lack of content. That being said, the general quality of the TV is great and 1080 looks better than on any previous TV i have had.

I got the TV in Australia before I moved here so the decision was slightly easier as the price was half of what they are charging over here. Unfortunately the removalists managed to bust it and I am now waiting for the insurance people to sort it out.

Nope. I'm interested. But they won't get a sale out of me until the price falls (which it will), players and content are readily available, and the DRM schema has been finalised.

They look amazing because they're playing a demo reel in ultra high def format.

I would be playing a blu ray of my own choice on the TV to see how that looked.
