I'm not interested in noise cancelling headphones.

I have never used closed headphones on an aircraft, only IEMs.

Are closed headphones even worth bringing onto an aircraft?

Noise cancelling are the best thing you could bring. Forget the underwear and shoes. bring noise cancelling headphones.

I have used Sennheiser HD-280 on the plane and its pretty good, but problem with closed headsets with enough sound isolation is that they are rather bulky.

On a plane I much prefer Shure SCL4-K which are IEMs with really good sound. Not exactly cheap headphones. They come with several different sleeves, among them a pair that basically works like ear plugs (that you use for noise canceling) and fits snugly in your ear together with the in ear earphones. I use them both as ear plugs (to get rid of the sounds of the airplane) and as music headphones.

Best headphones on a plane are noise cancelling headphones - good noise cancelling headphones.

99% of what Bose make are crap, but Bose QC15's set the benchmark when flying.

Have you looked at the in ear noise canceling headphones? Have a pair from blackbox and they work a treat. Previously I used my hd-25's but dispute being closed, they sat on the ear rather than around the ear making long haul uncomfortable.

$60 investment is well worth it

When not doing long haul I take my marley jammin positive vibrations head phones. They do a good job at keeping noise out without being noise canceling.

Currently down to $50 at noel leeming.

I have some in ear noise cancelling buds from black box bought in 2009, very good in long haul flights.

Only down side is I don't use them much day to day because I keep hearing the "thump" of my feet on ground when I walk.
