Hi guys,

First time posting on here!

I'm tossing up as to whether I get an Apple TV or the Roku 3 player.

What I'm after is a player that would let me easily stream content of Netflix, Hulu, as well as the BBC iPlayer. I'm relatively new to all of this so I'm after something that is easy to set up and has minimal issues/hassles. I'm very much a lay person so not to technical answers, please! :)

Appreciate any wisdom I can get from the masses

You cannot change the DNS settings on the Roku 3 (for UnblockUS etc.) It can be gotten around by changing them on your Router, but that then applies to your whole network.

Can the Roku 3 get iPlayer?

Roku can get iplayer if your Roku is configured for the UK region

But then you don't get Hulu etc

I am pretty sure, you need to buy a Roku from UK in order for it show the iPlayer app. US Roku's come with the US firmware which does not have iPlayer in the store. This was the case few months ago unless this recently changed. I have the US Roku 3 and love it. I watch Netflix, Crackle, Plex, Revision etc apps on it.

Do whatever you want to do man.

If you create a Roku account using UK address while using unblockus in the UK region. Then it will load the UK firmware onto the Roku.

If you're ios based - the. You can have an Apple TV set up with us apps (Hulu, Netflix etc) but the use an ipad etc to airplay iplayer (which I just checked was possible)

This solution works best with. DNS geo unblocking solution on your network as it can be wherever it needs to be to view overseas content (rather than manually switching).

To get the iplayer app on ios you need to create a uk itunes account.

You can get also get iPlayer without using UK region on your Roku:

Setup a PLEX server on your PC, add iPlayer to your PLEX channels, add PLEX (or the donate-ware Rarflix) to your Roku. Done.

I've never found the plex channel that reliable (it's more so on iphone and apple tv) where on the roku I never found iplayer via plex to work very well.  Especially for live content.  But YMMV
