It seems kind of unknown to most people, but it's pretty cool.
It's a free and open source media manager. The only thing that costs money is some plugins created by users.
I personally use MediaBrowser to locally manage about 30 users. Plex requires me to get a plex pass which kind of sucks. Even if I did get a pass, I would have to manually sign up everyone's account through plex.tv servers and run server authentication for all of them which isn't really possible considering this is a LAN server.
My users all use their web clients to access my server. Most of my content is encoded with h264 and mp4 file container for direct streaming.
It's got a decent amount of app support; Roku, iOS, Windows Phone, Android, XBMC etc
