I'm about to upgrade from an aging Samsung 37".

I use a Mac Mini with the TV so I have no need for a TV to be "smart", for me the mac is ideal.

I'm looking for about 50", 4K, ideally coming in under $2k.

I've been disappointed with the motion on my old samsung, so would be hoping for an improvement on that front.

So.. is there such a beast as a "dumb 4K" tv??

Many thanks,
Dylan

Recently got the Samsung 50" HU7000 UHD LED .
Harvey Norman matched the price for one day at Dick Smith

$1499

You may not need the Smart features, but just TVNZ on demand is a bonus.

Having said that, the Smart features (learning slowly) are proving to be quite useful.

The samsungs seem to have the best motion processing that I have seen. A panasonic was certainly making more errors and jumps when I tried a couple of TVs out, but those were both 1080 screens. In the end I decided not to buy a new TV as the sizes I wanted was too much of an investment for something that would be unboxed, used for a month and hopefully boxed up in January when some renovations happen.

Unfortunatly the motionplus processing isnt something that most reviewers actually test, preferring to turn it off to avoid the "soap opera" effect, or as I like to call it, make a slideshow into watchable motion effect.

Thanks for the replies.    I wonder if what I'm seeing is the Soap Opera effect.  As soon as I got the TV it made most TV and Movies look odd, almost too realistic... not in a pleasant way.    That's something I definitely want to avoid if I throw money at an upgrade.

Motion blur features can almost always be disabled in settings though or at the very least reduced.

Probably is that then, its a feature not a problem IMO, but if you like having 24 blurred images shown to you in succession instead of smooth motion then its able to be turned off.

Lol, the idea is to make what your viewing the most realistic as possible!

UHD's are smart at this stage - you're not really paying much extra to get a smart TV.
However, the cheap units are normally bottom of the range, with poor motion, below average upscaling, averagew contrast and poor colour accuracy.
Basically, you get what you pay for.
