If I use a Displayport > HDMI adapter, are there any differences with the audio and video as opposed to a regular HDMI port?

I don't think audio goes down that path. May be wrong on this.
I used a cheap china converter cable, but used the headphone out socked of our older MacBook pro to provide the audio.

on my Intel Nuc d34010wykh I didnt get video out of hdmi port so used mini display port to hdmi adapter and no problem with sound or video through it

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner, Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

Two random laptops I have tried worked OK using DisplayPort to HDMI dongles.

Though getting the audio through was a bit trickier - had to mess around with Windows audio mixer settings for apps to use the correct default output device.

Even then, Windows Media Centre also needed to be configured to use the correct output device.

mini displayport -> HDMI from my surface pro works fine for both Video and audio.

Depends on the adapter and the display adapter.

Active adapter I tried wouldn't do it no matter what I tried on 2 of the ports of my video card, third one worked fine.

Passive adapters worked on all ports but the card had issues running 3 of those at once.

Ive found disabling all the other sound devices is the easiest way to make sure that sound goes to the right screen. When it is a TV there will be the latency added by it to make the sound match the picture which can be a real pain when you are using it to feed thru to a stereo so I never used the TV audio except when watching videos on the tv.
