http://kotaku.com/346073/ps3-megabox-homebrew-project-is-linux-for-commitment+phobes

Just curious as to if anyone has tried this yet. I've got the required software and will probably give it a run tomorrow. Currently its only available in a 'very buggy' beta.

Its a good idea, but to be honest the only real thing it adds (for me) over the Game OS / XMB is full MKV Support. It will be interesting to see how user-friendly the final interface is, this will be an important factor, the current system is pretty smooth and easy-to-use.

I use the DLNA for all my media, I don't (and won't be) storing any files on the PS3's HDD, the XMB handles DLNA very well. Time will tell for Megabox.

Good to see some homebrew stuff surfacing for the PS3 though. I will report back with my thoughts once I get around to booting it up.

Interesting development.  The only problem with this kind of thing, as you've  pointed out, is that you are really just swapping one interface for another.

One of the greatest advantages of an HTPC , PS3 or well equipped media player is the ability (or potential) to perform most, if not all, of the media functions you require, on one interface. To be able to switch this way between movies, gaming, internet, tv etc on one interface is the ultimate in convenience in my view....and on the other hand not having to switch sources, tv inputs, resolutions etc
