Hi team,

Although I claim to be a geek, I don't really know the first thing about TVs. Our faithful Panasonic plasma has started freezing over the past couple of months and it's time for an upgrade.

Ideally I'd like something around 55 inch and 4K HDR specced. Budget up to 3k. Don't necessarily care about a smart tv, but not opposed to one either.

We on,y watch a small amount of tv, with streaming and feeeview being the main uses.

Any ideas?

i'd go for sony / samsung

last years sony x8500c is 4k and hdr

last years samsung 7 series and above are 4k and hdr

new gen sony x8500d is a good option

new gen samsung 7 series another good option.

or get a current gen one, the cheaper tvs are always 50hz so just look out for that, like last years x8000c is 4k 50hz no hdr.

Yes that is a very nice TV. Sony would easily be my pick.

Panasonic DX900. Has FALD compared to edge lighting which improves HDR by a big margin

Whatever you get, make sure it has at least one HDMI port specced to HDCP 2.2.

You will be very grumpy if you get a nice 4K HDR TV, and find out you actually can't properly connect a 4K source to it later on.

I went TV shopping a few months back. IMHO:

- Best picture (by a pretty big margin) - LG OLED sets - but very pricey and only available 55 inches and above. Serious thinking would have been required if my built in TV cabinet would have taken a 55 inch set.

- Next best picture - Panasonic - but limited app support and some problems with certain audio set ups. I actually liked Firefox OS though.

- Best overall smarts - Sony - which I currently own. I have a one remote solution for Freeview, DVD/Blu-Ray, Netflix and Youtube. I can also watch pretty much anything else via casting and/or the web browser (I have a media keyboard for the web browser). Also better audio options.

And I should have said, Android TV is really powerful, but a long way from having a fully consistent user experience.

I'm also interested in a new TV, and have been very interested in Panasonic's offerings.  In particular, they seem to have twin HD tuners, a record ability and 'tv anytime' meaning I can watch live tv on my mobile/tablet or shows recorded by the TV.  I havent seen other TVs offering something similar built in.

Wondering if anyone else has such a TV and whether it is good enough to replace the TiVo / Media box?

I would love to put the TV on the wall and not have to worry about the TiVo anymore...

edit - as a follow up question - does anyone know do these TV's (Panasonic specifically, or other smart TV's) have series link and record while the TV is turned off?

That's a nice TV and that price is pretty sharp.... I notice on the website that price finishes today though.

Sony also have some 7000 series TV's coming out that will be cheaper but they are only 50 Hz so don't get caught out by that.

I've talked to a few people who have had optical audio synch issues with Sony Android TV's.

Does anyone know if this has been resolved?

On all models? I'll test it out tonight, I didn't notice any issues when watching Plex with 5.1 out last time I checked.

What is the story with refresh rates? In one place a TV spec will say 120HZ or something high, then in another place it will say stuff like 3840 x 2160/30p for the video signal.

So what is it: 30Hz or 120Hz? I will be eventually getting into this and likely a PC will get plugged into it at some stage and I would expect 60Hz refresh rate as minimum? I will be wanting to put 60FPS content on it for example.
