My VT-55 plasma Panasonic has bit the dust and I have to find a replacement today.

Budget is up to 5K (this is firm).

Any suggestions from people who have just bought new or know people that have bought new.

Any recommendations muchly appreciated.

I need to get things sorted today or I am going to have to start talking to the missus at night so this is a code red gentlemen I repeat a code red.

Edit so far looking at this.

How about this?

$4998 so falls under your $5k limit, OLED so a great picture. 55 inch screen so no drop in size. Guess it depends if you want to go bigger.

If the old Panny VT series are anywhere near as good as people say I think you would be disappointed in anything not OLED.

And something related (but not really)

Is it a QLED or OLED because as far as I was aware, they are completely different smile

 So I just bought this.

They do have a sale coming up in the next couple of days so I was able to get this one for $3100 which is a big drop and a bonus for me for and oled. I did look at the bigger 4k one but to be honest I doubt I would every really use the capabilities of the 4k.

Reviews of it has given it a solid 8 in most cases so pretty happy with that.

The OLED picture is *awesome*. I even don't mind WebOS. I'm not a fan of the LG remote though, so will be interested in what kind of WAF that gets.

I wouldn't want to pay $4900 for the LG OLED right now. That's last years model and is being cleared out. They've been a few hundred cheaper than that in recent sales but when I was asking a few weeks ago apparently LG are out of stock now so it's only what retailers have left.

Yup hence the drop down to $3100 which I am comfortable about. They only had 2 left in stock. Not sure what the difference on the new models are going to be but I am not overly concerned and am happy enough with the deal I have.

That and I had to get something today, Could you imagine actually having to sit there for a whole night talking to the wife with no TV , sends shivers up my spine.

I got a scare with my 7yo panny plasma recently.

It switched on and would then shut off after a few seconds. I noticed it was flashing the power light on the front (11 times rapidly from memory).

After swearing loudly, a quick google revealed it was either the fan power supply or a problem with the fans themselves. Often turned out to be dust build up preventing the fans from spinning. Sure enough, when I looked around the back I could see one of the 2 fans didnt start spinning and the set would shut down a couple of seconds later. Found a nice tutorial on youtube on how to remove the back and it was super easy to clean the fans with a toothbrush and cotton buds - took around 10m. Its working great again - fingers X'd for a while yet until OLED drops a bit in price.

How did your Panny die?

Have you actually purchased it yet? $3100 is not a particularly great price for that model. Harvey Norman have been selling them for as low as $2999 for months, and numerous other retailers are currently selling for that if you look on pricespy.

I was looking at one during the boxing day sales, they were clearing them out then due to the curved screen being a poor seller.

Completely understand what you are saying but for the sake of $100 and the need for one now it has already been purchased.

My instinct is always want the greatest and latest too. I usually have to remind myself that yes, I might be able to see a marginal difference between model A (spec X for $Y, and model B (spec 2X for about $6Y) but when I get it home and watch from across the room without the other model right next of it to compare, I'm never going to tell the difference.

A bit OT, but as a student job I worked at a paint store. People would agonise over 6 subtle variations of the same basic colour. Yes you can tell the difference when you've got A3 swatches sitting on top of each other, but on the wall at home, it will make next to no difference to all except the most discerning. High water mark for this was watching a couple argue over two options with different names. Neither believed me when I told them it was the same colour, it just had different names for different colour charts. Power of the mind to fool itself.

Is that a 2016 or 2017 model?

I'm dreading the day my Pioneer plasma dies but that day is coming. IMHO there is still nothing on the market worth buying other than an OLED, and while they beat any LED hands down IMHO (and this is only based on limited viewing since I don't have one) I don't think the OLED quite handles motion as well as a good Plasma.
