Hey all, for the last few years I've been using what I think is the best kept secret in home audio the Logotech z906 speakers. But recently I've been wanting a 7.1 set and was floored at what seems to be a real lack of 7.1 systems on the market.

What are others using or what options are out there?

There are plenty of 7.1 systems around.. just not any AIO (All in one systems available) similar to the system you have around.

7.1 is just 2 more speakers so just buy another 2 Side Speakers (the same as the front/rears) and you'll a go.

the z906 has only a 5.1 amp so you'll have to get new AMP as well and its normally better to have the same speakers all around.

Better to just buy a proper AMP and new speakers. You should be able to find some older models on trademe which will do 7.1

Might cost a bit more than the z906

Kind of stunned Logitech haven't made a set themselves. Was hoping I was missing something. I have so many amps and speakers here (all 5.1 or under) not sure I'm keen for another setup heh

I'm running Wharfdale diamond speakers and a Wharfdale sub and very happy with the set up. Running from an Onkyo network receiver.

That said, I'm not a true audiophile.

Just be sure that the move from 5.1 to 7.1 is worth it to you from an aural sense. Personally, I'm glad I made the move from 5.1 to 7.1 when we built a (fairly basic) HT a few years back, but a good 5.1 system will (to my ears) still be better than a basic 7.1 system.

It's not clear what your use for the system is - is it for a proper HT experience with a TV, or to augment the sound for games/watching on a computer?

I used to be into home theatre big time, had a projector, big harmon kardon amp and cerwin vega speakers. Downsized to 55'' TV and the smaller speakers. Just wanted to add the extra 2 speakers if it wasn't a huge cost. The setup now is very good.

2 speakers don't cost much.. but your AMP can only do 5.1) so you will need something else to place the speakers on.

Yeah, I still believe an amp upgrade will be necessary, as others have pointed out above.

If you're wanting something small and low-key, and are ok about going to a proper receiver, what about a set of Kef eggs? Buy the 5.1 setup and an additional pair of the same speakers.

7.1 is still quite niche. There wouldn't be a lot of demand out there for a mass market all in one system.

Going on old data here... but the biggest selling amps in NZ used to be 7.1.

However, speakers #6 and #7 are normally used as 'Zone 2'.

Still, modern entry level 7.1 amps allow you to wire for a 7.1 experience and zone 2 at the same time, but if you're playing something in the second zone then it'll only play 5.1 in the main 'theatre room'.
