Hi all,

I’ve done a search but have been unable to find the answer. I’m using Mediaportal as my media application in vista, controlling it with the Microsoft media remote. Sometimes when I press buttons on the remote, it tries to start up vistas own media centre, which, is quite annoying. Does anyone know how to prevent vista launching the windows media centre setup when using the MCE remote in Vista, so, I can just use Mediaportal?

You need to stop the process "ehtray.exe" in task manager (ctrl+alt+del), this will stop it until you reboot.

To stop Windows loading ehtray.exe on boot you need to turn it off in msconfig.exe

Start -> Run -> msconfig.exe
Click the Start Up Items Tab (should show you a list of programs that start on launch)
remove ehtray.exe

Hope this helps! I had the same issue here on VMC and this fixed it.

Couldn't you stop the Windows Media Center services to achieve the same effect (legit quesiton - never tried this myself)?
If so, you could set them to manual start so that they don't start back up on reboot.

That would probably be a smarter way of doing it :P I haven't tried either..

Thanks for that. I went with the killing the ehtray.exe process and preventing it from running. Did the trick.
