I'm looking for a mce remote that can work in both xp and vista and also work with all pvr players that support h.264 hardware decoding with nz hd freeview.

I would suggest any one of Logitech's Harmony series. They can control basically anything that takes input from a remote, and then some.

Preferrably the Harmony One, which doesn't have the big flaws in the docking station of the previous versions (my 880 doesn't charge if I don't put some weight on top of the remote).

Hiya.  I've had great success with the Microsoft media centre remote. I got mine from www.elive.co.nz for $43 + post and it's supported by Vista/XPMCE (being Microsoft of course) and have it working sweetly under Mythbuntu. The remote comes with a USB IR receiver with a nice long USB cable so if your machine hasn't got an IR receiver then that'll sort it for you.
I've also got a Logitech Harmony 525 remote that Dick Smith's been clearing for $100 and it's an awesome remote for controlling everything - it can handle the MCE receiver as well as everything else in my cabinet (TV/DVD recorder/AMP/CD player etc etc etc)
Hope this helps.

Did a search and the Logitech Harmony One Universal Remote Control cost $300+ ouch.

The Logitech Harmony 525 Advanced Universal Remote is around $80+ but does it work in vista?

Does the Microsoft media centre remote work in xp with pvr apps like media portal and power cinema?

Logitech Harmony remotes are very configurable. Any model will work, just depends on how fancy you want them to be. I would consider upgrading my 880 to Harmony One.

Read my blog/review on Harmony 880, the software is the same for all units.

It will work out-of-the-box with Mediaportal. You only have to setup it up inside MP configuration. Not sure about PowerCinema.

It will work for other apps if you use custom remote software like Girder or HIP. But they are definitely not install & play programmes. I have found, personally, the benfits are outwayed by issues caused with using the custom drivers.
