I've been looking around for a half-decent theatre sound system for home use. The problem is I already have a DVD player and most of the ones I've seen include their own. Since I have a Sony TV and DVD player / HD recorder the one system I've seen is the Sony HTDDW1600, but some of the reviews mention that it only has HDMI switching and no decoding. What does this mean? What other systems that don't include their own DVD player would you recommend?

How much do you want to spend? It sounds like you want a AV reciever with HDMI switching and depending what source material you have and plan to have will help you make a decision on what model. Plus the issue of what speakers you have?

Look at the Onkyo range for a start, my fav.

Anyone want to buy a Onkyo 605? 3 mnths old :)

The Sony HTDDW1600 is $999 at Farmers now and that's the absolute maximum price.

I have no speakers, the Sony above is a receiver and speakers - here's the DSE page as a guide:
