I assume that when I change the brightness level on a display that I am increasing or decreasing the output brightness of the backlight.

What am I altering when I change contrast levels? For LCD's do the opacity characteristics of the LCD elements change?.

With Plasmas do the floresenting levels change?

So much to learn, so little time.
