Hi all!

did anyone get this combination working as good as an 8500GT/8600GT?
I used to read everything about it but I am not up-to-date with latest devlopments / drivers.
At that time the answer was NO and I had to get an nVidia.

If I can get rid of the video card, then I can use a PCI riser card for the tv tuner and everything fits into a very slim case...
That, and the extra heat generated by the silent 8600GT I have. Plus that I never got the HA to work (CPU 40-50%). Actually it worked once for a couple of days while using PowerCinema (5-10%) but I was unable to re-create those conditions. Not even with a OS re-install (Vista Home Premium).

The drivers improved the situation but it appeared it still doesnt accelerate as much as a dedicated card. Next ATI driver releases on the 12th and contains "ATI Stream" technology which is a new video transcoding thing, so might improve decoding more also.

Perhaps the best way would be to try?

I have that board and used onboard graphics via dvi -> hdmi.

I gave up using the video drivers for acceleration and instead rely on coreavc which does the job nicely. Depends on your CPU grunt of coarse.

I had it working fine in terms of video decode performance. I have since upgraded to a 9500GT and noticed no difference in video quality. CPU under 10% in both cases.

The remaining problems I had before upgrade were as follows.
- Major background flicker in MP when viewing menus with video playing in the background.
- HDMI audio and video didn't always detect properly coming out of standby. Reconnecting the HDMI cable fixed the problem.

Try using the PDVD8 codec rather than PowerCinema. From memory that and Catalyst 8.6+ was about when everything came right.

Don't assume that onboard video == less heat generated. When i stuck a 8400GT with passive cooling into my MCE box and disabled the onboard video the motherboard and case temperatures actually went down! The heatsink on the 8400GT was at least 4 times the size of the heatsink on the motherboard and in a better position to benefit from airflow through the case.

My780g worked great on freeview, but then I put a video card in (nvidia) worked fine - however the card was dodgey or something (rebooted as soon as I dragged a ruler out in illustrator, CS3 and CS4) so I went back to the onboard and now my 576i channels are broken.

My experience with 780G gigabyte mobo.

XP - H.A. works for 720P/1080P mkv and progressive freeview, but H.A. didn't work for interlaced freeview.

VISTA - H.A. works for freeview, both interlaced and progressive.

HTPC / Home automation (home assistant) enthusiast.
