Hi!

I'm looking to buy a 4K disc player, but I need it to be region-free for DVD, and ideally zone-free for blu-ray as well, though that's not a deal-breaker. What's currently available in NZ? I've found the modified Panasonic DP-UB9000, but that's way outside my budget.

As the 4K UHD Disc format is typically region free, budget wise i would just opt for a region free blu-ray player on top of something like a Panasonic UB820 or second hand UB900(No Dolby Vision though)?. Rapallo for instance has a region free Panasonic DMP-BD84 for $429. So around 1K for both that and a UB820?...but still getting up there. If you are just after USA region 1/A compatibility for Blu-ray/DVD? then i may have a 110V region 1/A Panasonic player in its box somewhere if i can find it? would just need a step down transformer. I used to use it a few years back but ended up going another route so packed it away.

I was hoping to replace my existing blu-ray player rather than add an extra one - space in the TV cabinet is a factor. What I've got now plays DVDs from all regions, and my collection includes discs from regions 1, 2, and 4, so the US player wouldn't be ideal (but thanks for the offer!). Are any of the available 4k players region-free for DVD, even if they're locked to zone B for blu-ray?

As far as i know Panasonic NZ can make your player(say you purchased one of theirs)region free for DVD. Blu-Ray Will still be region locked though so maybe give them a yell?.

Thanks - yes, apparently Panasonic service agents will unlock the DVD region for free, and retailers can order unlocked units. So that seems to be the way to go. Blu-ray unlocking doesn't seem to be worth the hassle.
