Hi guys...

Purchased a second-hand Wharfedale surround sound and have noticed the sub-woofer (WH-D8) has an annoying buzz.

Have picked up the unit while it is transmitting the buzz, so it's not a vibration from it normal resting location.

Would this be an easy fix by a mildly competent handyman, or should it be sent to a speaker shop? (shop suggestions welcome!)

Could be an earth loop hum.

Does it have it's own power supply? If so try another supply. Also If the power supply is plugged into a multi point adapter try plugging the power supply directly into the power outlet.

There was a thread on here some time ago about a similar issue IIRC.

Sub is plugged in to its own power point. I assume this means it has an internal power supply. Do you mean I could open up the back and try and change something out?

Issue only manifests when the speaker is being asked to produce loud and low frequencies. Other times it is fine, which leads me to believe it's not so much a power supply issue, as a speaker problem. Could certainly be wrong tho.

i'm not exactly sure what OP is describing but it sounds like the sub is bottoming out

OK. I thought it might have been powered by a power pack which supplied DC to the speaker.

From the extra information I would suspect either a part of the speaker or speaker cabinet/case is vibrating against another part or a problem with the speaker cone. Can you remove the front cloth cover and or the back and run the speaker like this and look/listen for the vibration? I kind of suspect it is something flapping or loose that is making the noise. Probably something simple to fix once you find it. A bit like the noises you sometimes get from the dashboard of your car as you travel over coarse bitumen. sometimes hard to find but generally easy to fix.
