Hi
A real nubi question
I just got my new 1080 46 LCD...sorry new toy head swell
I now want a blu ray player

I really don't understand what the point of the below machine has over other machines

Panasonic Blu - ray Player with 7.1 analogue audio output and VIERA CAST

I have a 6 year old Yami RX7???? with no HDMI inputs
So how is this machine going to sound superior to the ones with out 7.1
Also what cablling does it require
Hope this makes sense
Cheers

Hi Duffuss,

My understanding is that the sound is the same, there are just different types of connections to get the sound to your receiver. HDMI and 7.1. The 7.1 will provide the latest sound formats to older receivers that do not have HDMI.

I am not sure of the cabling required but I think it would require 8 if you used all 8 (7 plus the .1). What speaker set up do you have, 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1?

Hi Duffuss, If you want to keep your old receiver, you need to see if it has 5.1 or 7.1 analogue rca inputs on the back.  If it does then you'll need a blu ray player that can output this format.

To do this, the bluray player needs to be able to internally decode all the new hd audio soundtracks and convert them to analogue rca plug outputs.  You pay more for this ability, which is why the expensive models of bluray players are expensive.

Neraly every manufacturer has two models of bluray players.  A basic one which can't do any onboard decoding, and an expensive one that can.  The basic models need to be paired with a new receiver with hdmi inputs and on board hd audio decoding.  The expensive bluray player models do all the decoding themselves and can be used with older or lower spec receivers that can't normally decode the hd audio soundtracks themselves.

(Of note is that the PS3 can only decode the bluray audio itself, so it can never pass the raw info over to the receiver to let the receiver decode it, it has to do it itself internally.)

So....
If you keep your receiver and it has multichannel analogue inputs on the back, you'll need an expensive bluray player with mulitchannel analogue outputs on the back and a fist full of rca to rca cables to connect it all up.  Please note that most receivers don't apply any additional sound effects to this input signal, so all your configuration setup like speaker distance inside the receiver etc is not used and this usually has to be re done inside the bluray player itself.

Or sell your receiver, and buy a new receiver and a cheaper bluray player or ps3.  Then you'll need one hdmi cable only.

have you already bought the blu-ray player? - probably flogging an old horse but have you considered the PS3 - exceptional blu-ray player with bonus of online updates..
i have an older amp too and use optical out from PS3 to AMP for audio and HDMI from PS3 to Sony 60" for pic

Yeah putting it's fairly simplistically, you can spend a lot on a top spec bluray player to connect to an old receiver, or you can spend a bit more on a basic bluray player and a new reciever.
The latter gives you access to the full hd audio tracks off bluray.

I think it's worth ensuring you get access to these hd audio formats.  The formats have recently been settled upon and you should be good for a few years now since bluray has won out etc.

Just to note:  An optical/digital coax connection will not give the hd audio formats, so you must have hdmi connection to receiver (or a player that internally decodes with multi channel analogue outputs)

haha - too true Jaxson, but then again you get into a bigger debate about hearing the difference between HD audio on a home theatre rig and and audiophile rig worth considerably more... nothing beats power for sound :) still i shouldnt get off topic.
