I posted this in my Blu-Ray from USA topic but I think it was off topic so am making the proper new topic.

I will be buying a AV receiver for the blu-ray player. The salesperson at Harvey Norman said I have to get the later model receivers with HDMI indicated on the front panel or else the blu-ray will not show the best picture quality. Is this true? or can I just buy a decent second hand one from Trademe as long as it is a 5.1 but without HDMI indicated on the front panel. I am confused as I thought the function of the receiver was mostly for sound. Cheers.

If you are outputing the HDMI straight to TV and the optical connection from BluRay player to the AV's optical, then that could work.

However, you could look at today's AV with HDMI in from the BluRay Player, then HDMI out to TV (from AV), less cables less hassle but perhaps wee bit more in price.

Also, BluRay has tracks or can output 7.1, so if you want to get full 7.1, you may want to look at AV with such option.

Don't quote me on this but as I understand it some of the early HDMI releases don't do the current HCDP so if you connect a new Bluray or TV the HDCP link may not be valid therefore the bluray player will not output a full HD picture. I think the current HDMI version is 1.3? so you will need an amp that conforms to that standard (or has upgradable firmware at least)

Bear in mind that HDMI into the receiver is the only way to get the new HD audio formats (or maybe 7.1 analog in too).
