I have a HP Mini 110 and when I try to watch a video on it - AVI files - I get skips and stalls (video freeze).  Was wondering if it's just that this computer doesn't have a video card that can handle movies.  If that's the case, i'll need to get a new computer.  Was wondering what type of video card would be appropriate for watching such files.  I know next to nothing about video cards.

The mini should cope with SD video OK. AVI is a container. What are the audio/video codecs being used?

Install ffdshow from here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm

Click on the green download button.

Download, install, reboot and then try again, you should be okay after.

It really depends on the video content. The video chipsets in most netbook machines are all fairly low spec and can't handle any HD video.

Have you tried different video players. VLC plays most avi's really well.

The HP Mini 110 probably won't handle HD (720p or above!) unless you use something like CoreAVC, which will only let you play low bit-rate 720p.. I have an asus 1005HA which i've tested this on..

What does MediaInfo show for the AVI file you're trying to play:
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/

As mentioned most netbooks are not powerful enough to play HD video, so you may need to convert the file to a lower quality.

Good to hear it worked. Would be interesting though to see what happens if you do get some high def avi files. The HP Mini may not cope due to the hardware limitations.
