Jaxson: Only thing of interest here is that this is the first tuner box with different internals to the PlayTV box. Japan uses a different format than us.
PlayTV is the piece of kit that will relate to NZ so we'll just wait until an NZ specific version of the software arrives. (I highly suspect this is entirely related to NZ being the only place where a full EIT EPG is not broadcast alongside any other EPG format such as MHEG5). I have no idea what way Sony will go on this, in that I'm certain they'll be pushing for freeview certification like they have in Australia, but I can't see freeview NZ certifying something that takes the MHEG5 EPG info and displays it in a different format. So we wait, and wait some more....
A Freeview education campaign is due to launch on all channels in the next couple of weeks, but Freeview CEO Robin Parkes said that the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) due to launch at the end of 2009 would not work with existing televisions: "It's not backwards compatible".
