Hi All,

I recently purchased and installed a Sony BDV-300
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665780566

When watching DVD's or Blu-Ray's the sound will occasionally get muffled, specifically the speech will sound like it is coming from inside an airtight room and you are on the outside.

I have the Blu-Ray amp connected to a Sony Bravia 32" KDL-32W5500 through an HDMI cable.

I have checked all the connections and they seem fine and have used the microphone provided to auto-calibrate the centre of the room for surround sound.

Any ideas what might be the problem?

Cheers,
Mark

PS. I also have a TelstraClear box which is connected to the TV by S-Video. I have the component plugs (white and red) running to the Blu-Ray Amp. This way I get sound on the home theatre system when watching TelstraClear.

Bad connection to the center speaker, or a fault with it would be my first guess since there is usually some center content in the other mains as well which is quiet but audible.

It does sound like a centre speaker issue.
The auto calibration will have picked up any mis-connected leads, but it may not see any intermittent problems as such.

As an aside, what type of HDMI cable do you have? Some of the very basic ones do give issues from time to time, not many... but some.

The HDMI cable came in a Belkin Essential HDTV Kit which included a HDTV Surge Protector and Display Cleaner.

I rang Sony and they initially thought it was something to do with DRC. I turned this to off and saw no change. They also suggested boosting the centre speaker volume, but that wasn't effective either.

One of my friends thinks the amp connection to the centre speaker could be overheating. I am going to try swapping speakers to see if the problem persists which a different speaker at the centre. At least that will rule out the actual speaker itself.

Do you have propper cables or have you done it ghetto styles with the wire thru the hole and winding down the plastic crappy bindingpost onto it?

If the latter, re-do them and make sure that the stripped conductor is extending out of the plug slightly, otherwise you are tightening onto insulation and it will be a bad connection. Even better get some spades put on the cable so that it actually gets a good connection.

Thanks for the posts.

I switched the left speaker with the centre speaker and vice versa.

I had no sound drop out with the left speaker in the centre position.

I was not able to tell if the centre speaker had any sound drop outs in the left position.

I have switched the cables on the centre speaker and have ensured that the connection was on the wire and not the insulation. The centre speaker still drops sound regardless.
