Hey guys,

I recently bought a 50" Panny plasma and was wondering if there are cheaper alternatives than getting a cabinet from the electronic shops?

I'm basically after something that is a "open" has possible. Similar to this:

Criterion(everette worthington)

The only requirements is that the width has to be at least 1200mm and its at least 2 shelf design.

Also prefer reactangular shelf designs.

Are furniture shops worth having a look? (and trademe obviously)

Normally, JB and Harvey Norman had some great deals on heavily discounted cabinets but however these were all suited for around 46" and smaller. Throw in the fact that I want an open design makes the choices even slimer.

I got mine from the Warehouse, it cost me around $100 I think and it fits my 50" rear projection so it wouldn't have any problem fitting yours. This was a few years ago though but I'd definately suggest having a look there.

Just a note - check the weight limit of the cabinet you buy.
You should be fine with what you find in the Warehouse... but 'should' may not be good enough... and it's your brand new tellie at risk.

Yep, definately aware of taking into account the weight limit.

I got something from Harvey Norman for $300 or so that fits what you need. It's slightly wider than my 50", two shelves, glass front, wood back, on top is mostly wood and partly glass. Seems to have no problem with my TV.

Trademe is worth a look too.

I got a great AV cabinet off there and it was substantially cheaper than anywhere else, though obviously 2nd hand.

I can make one similar to the one in the photo below, but it will be 28 mm solid pine, the one in the photo is 32mm Pacific Rimu panel, 45mm Pacific Rimu support

for a cabinet made of Pine, it will be $200, can customise to your required height, the width is around 1500mm wide, and 550mm deep

The tv in the picture is a Panasonic 50 inch. the cabinet showing in the photo below is 1500mm wide, 650mm deep.

Mate $200 is nuts, if it's fully finished, that'd cost $1000 or more in a store. I had a quote for something about that width in black wood, but with doors and a back, and it was about $2000.

ok then... make it $500....

by the way it is finished in 3 coats of Danish oil, the assembly is glue + screw, not cheap nail gun stuff.

To be honest I make these not for profit but for interest.

I dont have a big overhead like those furniture stores thats why can keep the prices down

no worries~ I just delivered one today to West Auckland.

1500 x 500 x 500, 32mm Pacific Rimu panel.

haha its all good. I saw those wood rimu cabs on trademe by MrFlower and the price was really attractive.

However I have now a cabinet. It was free.

All it cost me was spending around $2500 on a HT package. Damn that Harvey Norman salesman was clever.

I might contact MrFlower after saving up a bit more next year and getting him to make one exactly like the example he posted but also with a middle self. Something about the "solidness" of a proper wooden cabinet. Time to start saving...
