Hi

I am planning to buy a AV Receiver. Not sure what I need to look for when purchasing one?
Which brand is good? I know there are brands like Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony, Marantz, Sherwood

If I buy a home theater system, can I connect that to the AV Receiver?
Is AV Receiver needed if I have a home theater system?

Is it worth to buy a AV Receiver? Can I connect PS3 to the AV receiver to get good sound?

Regards
Antony

Woah - back the boat up... this is a can of worms.

Let's define terms first.
1: By home theatre system, do you mean a 'home theatre in a box' (HTIB)? As in a single black box consisting of a built in DVD or BluRay player, and 5 pre-packaged speakers (a centre speaker, two front speakers, two surround speakers) and a subwoofer. They all come with their own cables (often with propriety plastic plugs on the end) and a subwoofer that is passive (not plugged into a power socket at the wall).
The 5 most common brands are...
Panasonic, LG, Sony, Samsung, JVC.

2: AV Receivers (seperate units that you plug multiple sources into) essentially act as brains... these allow you to choose your own speakers, your own sub, your own cables and of course, the DVD player, gaming console, CD player, turntable, Apple TV etc etc.
The most common brands (in order of my preference) are Marantz, Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha, Onkyo, Sherwood*.

You CAN connect your PS3 to an AV Receiver, BUT you will need to have speakers to connect to your AV Receiver to start with (5 speakers + 1 subwoofer).

Things to look for...
1: Connectivity - look for a decent number of HDMI connections, and make sure the HDMI's are HDMI repeaters (capable of HD audio).
Look to see if you can connect older gear (DVD players / tape decks / VCR's etc) if you need to, and at the same time, see if the AV Receiver will upscale these items, so that all you need is one HDMI cable going into the TV - which at the same time will improve picture quality.
2: Power - will it run the speakers you want to use? Check out the ohms of your new speakers... and don't expect an entry level AV Receiver to run a pair of ginormous, floor standing, power sucking hifi speakers...
3: How many audio 'zones' are you looking to power? Just one? Two? Three? How many video zones? One... two?
4: Will you be plugging in an iPod to listen to music / watch TV? Can you buy a dock to do this with?
5: Do you have a turn table?
6: Will your significant other agree to you putting all this kit into your house?
7: Why have you read this far? Go get yourself a beer.
8: There's a whole LOT more to cover on this topic, but hopefully it's a start.

*note, this comment will annoy some users - but... um... nyanyanyanaaa.

How much money are you wanting to spend? That would be my first question.
