Hi there,

I bought a blu ray player (Philips model BDP5100) for my dad.

He bought the Avatar movie to try the device (Blu-Ray edition - extended collector's edition), the default audio is DTS, all the other audio options are DD stereo or DTS (non-english languages).

The audio system that he has is quite old and doesn't support DTS only DD.

Should this blu ray player "convert" DTS signal to DD 5.1 or my dad must update his home theater?

Can you give me some pointer for what I must look for in the player so that he makes this conversion?

Must be real old HT to not to support DTS.
Update the HT would be be your best option.
The blu ray disc did have Dolby digital 2.0 so there was sound just not 5.1 channels.
The play will convert, but just to stereo out on the left/right RCA plugs.

I would have thought that there was a "Audio" menu setting that allows you to change the audio playback for the movie as there are on DVD players/movies. i.e DD 5.1 the default but can force to play DTS if on the disk..

The DTS HD track should be output at DTS 5.1 Core on older systems. I don't think it would be re-encoded as DD. Should be able to output stereo PCM via optical/coax (Page 18 - Digital Audio). The problem with that is, you would lose DD or have to manually switch it back for DD titles. Another option is using the 2 Channel analog output for DTS titles.

Hi all,

thanks for all the replies, yes, thats what happens, if I select DTS audio I get stereo sound in the TV from the HDMI.

I always thought that it would convert from DTS to DD 5.1 :(, guess I was wrong.
