I just bought a Samsung c6500 50" plasma and a cheap yamaha reciever and speaker pack.

I have the xbox 360 (one of the new "s" ones) connected with hdmi to the reciever and the. Hdmi to the tv.

When the xbox is selected I get picture and sound on the tv but not the amp. If I turn the tv to external speaker I still get no sound. To get sound from the xbox to the amp I have to connect it via optical.

Is that normal? I was wanting to use the optical to go from the tv to amp so I can get the tv through the amp. The only audio out is the optical one.

Can you change the format the sound is set? ie something like telling the xbox to downmix from dts to stereo (for example).

That's a total guess btw.

I have the same setup, Try another HDMI input on the receiver as may be a video only /external audio input. Also as above confirm the audio output setting on your xbox. You mention you get sound through the TV? I would personally have the internal TV Speakers disabled and only use the receiver.

Yea I had a look over the manual last night and I will try telling it to decode the 5.1 see if that works.

I have to have the sound on the tv as at the moment I have no way to get sound from the tv to the amp. If I can get the 5.1 working over hdmi then I can move the optical to the tv.

Unfortunalty I only got a cheap reciever ( will get a better one later and move this to the pc) so it only has 2 hdmi inputs.

Sounds like you got the same Yamaha package that I got - from JBHifi over the Christmas period. I had the same issue but with my PS3; no sound.

So after a bit of searching on the web I found others with the same issue; and the solution was as follows:

Tv - Amp; optical (audio)
PS3 - Amp; optical (audio)
Amp - Tv; HDMI (video)

The only issue with this is that with the Yamaha amp; it has 2 optical connections. One for the TV (by default) and another which from memory is the CD player.
BUT you can reassign the audio for the CD player to another input (for example component) and then set the Audio for the DVD (Ps3) to the now free'd up Optical.

Works a treat. Happy as larry now. Although just sit hoping that I don't need any more HDMI ports in the short term :) - but that's what you get for a $400 package I suppose :)

Went home for lunch and had a bit of a play.

Still the only way to get 5.1 from the xbox is via optical. Not sure if it's a amp or xbox problem.

Will have to buy another optical cable only $11. Need to get another hdmi anyway

For the money I am happy with the unit. I just wanted better sound then the built in speakers. Turns out the built in ones sound way Better then my old LCD. You got a better price then I got for it. But was the same cost as a samsung htib so better then that. But I got a good price on the plasma so I'm happy

Yeah once you get it all setup; you will be fine...just a bit of shagging around initially :)

I picked it up in the New Years sale and was actually going in to look at the Onkyo setup; but the price of this one $399 was just a little too hard to pass up. I am no audiophile, but have been wanting a dedicated Amp to replace our Sony htib for a while; the result is perfect.....for now :)

Your amp will feature HDMI pass through, not repeaters... meaning it'll only send video through HDMI, not video and audio.
So yeah, optical will be your friend.
The next amp up (RXV467) would have given you video + audio via HDMI, but oh well, as long as you can make it work for you.

yes after a little research i have discovered that my amp (HTR-6230) only does HDMI pass through so optical is needed for sound.

it will also only output on the HDMI inputs from the HDMI so i cant plug the WII into the amp has to be the TV.

Little disappointed I had assumed that I would be able to plug the Xbox, DVD recorder and wii into the amp and then just 1 HDMI into the TV. but no i need 2 cables for the xbox and DVD recorder and have to plug the wii into the TV making more of a cable mess.

I may see about taking it back as i have to talk to them anyway as i received no FM aerial with it.

An upgrade is probably in order. My Onkyo + Wharfedale setup cost something like $1500 on sale (20% off) and sounds much awesomer than my $400 Panasonic stereo.

Yeah... so you have to spend more than that to get RCA up-scaling to HDMI...
I guess there's no such thing as a bargain unless it suits your needs down to the ground.

the package i got is still better value then the samsung package i was looking at. but i would not of got it if i was made aware of its limitations.

i will think about taking it back and just saving for a few months for a RX-V1065 like i wanted.

the built in speakers are better then expected

Thanks to all involved for your help.
