Ok so the tv card in my pc throws video into .wtv files on my hard disk.

What do I need to do to get those programs to display on my tv over the network?

I've got the TV set up on the network and can browse the web and youtube etc.

I went in to Video/Music/etc, and it seems to want me to connect to a media server... but I don't have a media server on the network... I've got my windows 7 machine.

What do I need to install so that the TV can see the content?

TIA

D

Check your imanual.
If its an ex720 series or saimilar it doesn't support .wtv files.
Sony Bravia EX series only support the following -

 Video: AVCHD, MPEG2, MPEG1, MP4 (AVC), MP4 (MPEG4), DivX, WMV

You will need to convert you .wtv to a file acceptable to the TV.

My PC card records .ts files and I have to view on my EX720 via my Media Player (A C Ryan PlayonHD2).
IMO it's easier to buy a media player rather than having to convert files all the time.

Unit is a CX52/32

I discovered I had to set up WMP to stream first.

Then the TV found the 'media server' ok, but yes, it won't play the wtv files properly.

It has a go, but the picture looks like a tv that needs a degauss.

What tool to I use to convert them to the right format?

I use VideoReDo TVSuite V4 to edit my files. Will also convert to many other formats and burn to disc. It's very fast and easy for editing.
The free trial is only about 2 weeks and its relatively expesive to purchase but I think its value for money.

There are free ones around but as expected, if you want quality, you get what you pay for.

If you just want to convert, then try Handbrake... not quick, but it seems to handle everything I throw at it.

Thanks guys. I'll have a look at handbreak to start with, as I do just want to convert them to play.

Why Sony doesn't have software in this thing to just play wtv files? ...seems to have every other thing under the sun.

I found a useful link at see the wmp can control devices but can't control mine.

I'd love that to be so. Ideally I can throw content at the TV over the network so I don't have to keep getting up and changing the DVD for Mr 3.

Well, Sony aren't exactly known for widespread codec support... in fact, in the past, the phrases 'locked down and propriety' have been widely used to describe Sony's approach to things. Times they are a changin'... but in your case, probably not quickly enough.

na I'm not unhappy. Would be helpful if it would just play without having to stuff around with the files, but it's not the end of my world either.

but yes, now you mention it, I do recall sony are like that.

but that's ok... i'm testing out a range of solution ideas for some customers at the same time... we'll just make some different recommendations based on something that's a bit more turn key....

But this Sony TV does a host of stuff... I'm liking the youtube software.

I'd love for the Sony range to have the ability to use USB or Bluetooth keyboards... that'd make the interweb apps far more usable :-)
