Friend bought one off Trademe cheap. Good condition, but...

The image is washed out, but only has brightness, no contrast.
RCA only

New bulb (or bulbs?) are $200 will that help much? I.e. bring it back to an as new image?

I doubt it.
Probably deteriorated imaging lenses/mirrors etc.
I don't think they were ever very good anyway. The picture always looked washed out and grainy to me on all the ones I've seen.
Your friend would have been better offf putting the money towards a new LCD or Plasma TV. They can be found quite cheaply now.
