I own an apartment with a star wired setup, but with only 1 x cat5e cable to each of the separate 5 outlets (as opposed to the required 2x cat5e to basic areas / more to important areas).  The ability to run additional cables is next to impossible.

So, what are the optons with the single runs to each outlet when I'm thinking of the multiple options I may have/need... ie: A single cable has 8 wires (?) and POTS needs 2x wires, Ethernet needs 4(?) etc, so can I wire up each outlet to have options such as...

1) 1 or 2 x POTS, 1 x LAN.
2) 2 x LAN
3) Other options?

Hoping I make sense about what I'm asking.  Any info would be appreciated.

You can run data on the rest of the cat5 wires, leaving the two wires for telephone. If you need to add more devices at the end you can add a switch and run multiple devices off that meaning thay will share the wire back to your router. It does create a bottle neck if you are streaming etc but should be adequate.

You're right about your options.  But if I were in your situation I'd go for full ethernet (Gbps) and use VOIP options for the phone set up.

With the 4 wire ethernet setup you can only achieve 100Mbps.  Thats going to be fine for almost everything in fairness...but if you have a situation where you're pushing big files/data between two (or more) machines in your appartment you'll want 1Gbps pretty quickly (I did).

Note you will only get 100Mbit not gigabit network speed if you do this.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have any Gigabit equipment, nor a need, but when I do I don't think I'll be worried about POTS. So will be reverting back to the full wiring and a central hub then.

Anyone have a good description or site of which connections on a socket are used for what, ie: Data vs Phone? Phone I think I know, but which 4 wire connections are actually for Data?

If the sockets are wired correctly at both ends then you don't need to/shouldn't rewire the sockets themselves.
Get youself some of these instead:

http://www.cablesdirect.co.nz/catalog/entry?entry=334&page_number=1

Those adapters will split the single cable and allow either two computers, one computer & one phone or two phones.
You need two units of the same type to make it work.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Hi, I recommend you leave the wiring of the patch panel and outlets as fully wired (ie all 4pairs/8wires) and use data/voice splitters at each end of the circuits you want both phone and data, this way its clear what the sockets wired for and 2seconds to revert back to full 4pair GigE service.

http://www.cablesdirect.co.nz/catalog/entry?entry=334

The part you need is the C-RJ45LT4 1xUTP and 1xPh, you will require them in pairs, ie one at patch panel and one at outlet.

Yep as you can see on the sticker on the top of adapter the lads have linked, pin's 4-5 and 7-8 aren't used for 100Mbit.

Easiest way to not screw up the wiring is to wire it properly (EIA/TIA 568A for NZ usually, you can use 568B if you like but just be consistent) and use adapters at each end.

Does anyone know where you can get those small RJ45 jack mounts that Telecom use for ISDN terminations rather than those great big ugly power outlet sized ones??

Something like this but single

Thanks for the replies and very useful links. So looks like 1, 2, 3 & 6 are used for 100base-TX and 4/5 are used for phone, with 7/8 being spare in this scenario.

The problem is there aren't sockets wired at the central point. It's just a Krone block with the two wires for phone looped together on the krone by the original Telecom techs that installed my line.

I have since installed a central splitter for DSL. So I have a couple of unfiltered lines going to some sockets and the rest are filtered. I can understand keeping it clean and standardised you'd use the adapters, but it's not really an option for me yet. Also you don't have the option of two phone + UTP to a single plate.

I may have to have a bit more of a think. I guess to do this either way I would need some kind of Patch Panel. I was thinking of terminating the 5 cables on a 6 way plate with RJ 45 Sockets on it, there is already a flush mount there with a blank plate. And then I could wire up some RJ 45 leads to the krone and plug in any combination with the above adapters as needed? My head hurts.

Hi, firstly I suggest you have the unfiltered line go only to the modem, do not split it off to other circuits used or not, this will cause line stubs that screw DSL, this is RF you are dealing with not just simple voice.

Are all four pairs of each circuit terminated on the Krone modules, maybe a photo would be good, but the good news is you can easily make this work, just pop up a photo and we can proceed.

6 way plates are too tight to work with IMO, both installing them and actually getting your finger between plugs to pull them out.

I would pull the wires out and put them into a 12 port surface patch panel, loop thru a few sockets at one end to make your ones to jump for phone (say 9-11), use one of them for the unfiltered DSL (12) and the rooms on 1-5. Then use the pair splitters on the outlets you want to have analog phone available on.
