Hi. Many of you will know that CD/DVD media are not as permanent as the original design were meant to be.
Many of my early CD are unreadable due to mainly degrading of the optical coating.
These disks cant be repaired, although some of the data can be reconstructed.

This thread is for restoring disks that have handling marks or impurities on the optical surface.

Recommended method to restore is to use alcohol and a lint free cloth.
What I've found is an equal or better solution is to use liquid hand soap (which has no fat content) and tissues.
In bathroom:
Wipe a teaspoon of hand soap over the playing surface of disk.
Wash the disk thoroughly directly from tap water.
Using tissues thoroughly dry the disk on both sides and check for any lint residue, ensuring the surfaces are left clean.

Hope this helps some of you getting your disks back to working condition.
Regards,
Al.

I use window cleaner and a clean non-fluffy kitchen towel. Paper towels / tissues can cause minute scratching - which is why they aren't recommended for cleaning spectacles. But the drying technique probably won't make that much difference to a CD/DVD that already has a series of scuffs/ scratches.

For difficult spots, a micro-fibre cloth can be useful.

Always remember to wipe radially, from the inside hole to the rim, and not "around" the disc.
