I have just purchaced a new HD 3D LED TV and have  connected to it a PS3, a 7 year old DVD recorder, and a std def sky box. The PS3 is connected with a HDMI cable,The DVD with the three colour component cable and the L&R twin audio cable and the sky box with a single yellow Video plug  and the L&R twin audio cable.
This all works as it should and the sound comes from the tv speakers.

I also have a home theatre set up consisting of an Onkyo TX DS 676 amp about 12 years old, driving a pair of twenty year old L&R Monitor Audio stand mount speakers,a B&W 12 year old centre and pair of in ceiling rears.

To make things more enjoyable sound wise I connected the TV to the amp with an optical cable. Also the PS3 to the amp with an optical cable and the DVD with a coaxial cable. The sky is connected with a L&R twin audio cable as I listen to sky music sometimes.

I realise that my amp is well out of date with all the latest sound processing technology, but what I would like to know is how much should I feel deprived when listening to  and watching a Blueray HD 3D disc like Avatar. What am I missing out on sound experience wise? Is there that much difference to make me want to replace my amp or is the difference just small as not to mater.

I would like any comments from anyone who has done any upgrades along these lines.  Thankyou.

Huge difference.

Try a DVD at home (up loud of course), then take it to a store that has a good system setup and demo the bluray version there.

You'll definitely hear the difference.

I'm running a Sony Amp that's around 12 years old and my Blu Ray sounds pretty awsome through it. Seems to decode everything OK (Dolby, DTS etc).
Would like to upgrade to a new one but the only advantage I see at the moment would be HDMI connections which weren't around when I bought the Sony.
Disadvantage would be the higher spec modern ones are taller by about 25mm and won't fit my current cabinet.

I don't recall exactly how it turned out, but from memory you can't do 3D and HD audio from the PS3 anyway.  Maybe that was just the fat version PS3, or maybe it dropped bluray HD from 1080p to 720p, someone will know, but the point is you might need to upgrade more than just your amp...

DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) are supported by the PS3 while playing Blu-ray 3D movies. 3D video output is 1080p on the PS3 too... where are people getting the 'PS3 only does 720p with 3D' thing from? I know the very first Avatar video game was pretty poor looking... but the rest I've seen has been done well.

From places like this

Looks like it had that limitation initially but a future firmware update looks to have addressed this.
PS3 update 3.70 looks to have sorted it, so it looks like you'll be all good to go as Dunnersfella says Smile.

Thankyou for all your replies. The PS3 belongs to my teenage daughter and she plays her games on it.We have only had the TV for three days and the house is "upside down" at present as the EQC are repairing the quake damage.Shortly I will go and buy a 3D movie, sit down and watch it paying particular attention to the sound, then take the same disk to a specailist dealer and try it out on the latest gear.
From what I have seen so far the image that comes out of the PS3 is stunning.I believe that all the firmware updates have been done on a regular basis so the PS3 should be up to date.
Regards
John
