Thought I'd introduce myself with a little history

Firstly on my computers.

In 1980, TRS-80 PC-1. My first portable computer that I was still using this in 1987-88, to calculate "Horse Racing" odds.
In 1984, Sinclair Spectrum +. I wrote my first car racing database and game this one.
In 1987, Amstrad CPC 664. I used this to analyze "horse racing" statistics.
In 1988, Casio PB1000. I upgraded from TRS-80 PC-1 for portable computing.

Thereafter, in 1990, I entered the PC World at "home", with an old Zenith XT Laptop @ 4 Mhz. In 1996, I bought PC-Direct Pentium @ 133 Mhz, which I upgraded to an AMD K-II @ 300 Mhz in 1998. In 2002, I got a TL Systems "Dream Machine" with an Athlon XP @ 1800 Mhz. I have since upgraded the GF Card from a GF Ti4200 to a GF 6600 GT and from 512 MB to 1.5 GB of RAM. My two original 80 GB drives are still sufficient. I also have an IBM T41 Laptop.

I also have had other portable computing devices. i.e. Palm III (1997), Palm Tungsten T (2001)(where the "TT" in KiwiTT comes from) and finally a Telecom Harrier (2005).  Reverted back to a basic Nokia as I only really talk on mobile devices.

So there you go, 28 years in "personal computing", which excludes my applied computer classes in High School, where I used punch cards to write basic programs in 1977! That means I am celebrated my 30th year in computers, in 2007.

Finally, to celebrate my 31st year in computers, I got this.

ASUS P6T Deluxe X58 Motherboard <- Was offered an Intel one, but this had better component cooling, for longer life possibily
INTEL Core i7 920 2.66 Ghz <- Sufficient for my needs - being LGA1366 can upgrade later if required.
G.SKILL 2GB DDR3-1600 x 3 = 6 GB in total <- Excellent for me to continue my Virtualisation
Sapphire HD 4870 512 MB DDR3 - Toxic version <- Overclocked, don't need 1 GB and the GX2s are overheating and being returned
150 GB VelociRaptor 10,000rpm HDD <- Don't trust SSD just yet
CoolerMaster 690 Black with eSATA, USBx2, Audio ports on top !!!
Silverstone OP700 700 watt PSU <- Sufficient for my initial needs
LG-DVD 20x, LogiTech Keyboard, Microsoft Mouse
Windows Vista 64bit Home Premium

As to what I use them for.

Initially, used it for compiling Car Data, which developed into making car racing games based on this data, albeit rudimentry.  Graphics were poor in those days.

I have been playing Wargames on the PC since my first Pentium 133.  e.g. Close Combat Series, Age of Empires, Total War Series, and the Civilisation Series.  Never be into the FPS or Car Racing games (except when I had a Playstation 1/w GT2 on it - long since sold)

I am now actively modding Civilisation IV to re-enact WWII.

As to my work.

Well started in clerical/administration, moved into computer support proper in 1987, and was a manager by 1996.  Went back to Computer Engineering Support in 2000 and worked myself back up to management again in 2005.  Now back where I enjoy the work - computer engineer again.

So that me.

Hi, looks like you have a wealth of expierience there.

Your post reminded me of my first computer, the old trusty Commodore 64 complete with tape drive! Used to take about 30 minutes to load a game.

A short update ... I've decided to retire from my IT career. 30+ years is enough. Looking at enjoying the technology still, but for fun as opposed to work.

Now doing volunteer work ... and it is far more rewarding, yet the pay is not as good ;)
