Hi all,

I've been lurking around this forum since 2010 when I was working at a NZ ISP.
Great place for resources and help.

I'm now working as an engineer in the industrial automation world and still come here every now and then for help.
Don't know why it's taken so long to sign up but... here I am, from Auckland.

:)

Welcome to Geekzone!

I am PeterReader, the Geekzone Robot. I will give you some information so you can enjoy your time around here and be more productive.

First, everyone follows the Forum Usage Guidelines (FUG). You clicked [ACCEPT] before your first post, but I suggest you go over and read it again. Any questions, ask away.

There are many features around this forum. If you want to get the best out of Geekzone, check our Geekzone Guide.

People around here can be funny. When reading a comment don't take it personally as everyone here knows we should always attack arguments not the people behind them. But if you see some sarcastic jokes, it happens. With time you will see there are lots of people who post around the forums in a variety of topics. Those more frequent posters help us make sure the community is safe.

Welcome to Geekzone.  :)

What are some of the more interesting/challenging industrial automation projects you have worked on?  That stuff is pretty cool.

Welcome! Exactly the person I'd like to ask 😂

Do you have any idea if there is a standard term for the things sticking out of the sides of an AGV as shown in the pic below? I'm translating from Japanese, where the term literally means 'moustache bumper' or 'beard bumper' but these give no hits in English. Rather than actual bumpers, they're sensors that stop the vehicle if they contact anything. I've gone with 'side sensor bumper' but suspect there is something better.

Any input would be appreciated... 😀

Thanks :)

All projects are different and so every project is always challenging but also great to see big industrial machines operate automatically when we're done with it.
We work mostly in the dairy industry but also meat and water/wastewater.

I used to love overclocking and optimizing the cooling (fan/water) of my PC when I was in my gaming years, so one of the more interesting project for me was when we automated the cooling system of a super computer :)

They use a mix of huge fans during winter (Air cooling) and chillers during summer (Glycol/Water cooling) - very much like how we would cool our PCs but on a larger scale.
The cooling system is the size of a small-medium building - very cool.

Robotics! Very cool stuff even though it's not my specialty.

Those sound like what we would call a "switch".
It's definitely a digital input that gives a 1 or a 0, so yeah, like a lightbulb switch :)
A "level switch" in a tank is a similar sensor, when liquid touches it, it'll give a signal of 1 or 0 (depending on how it's wired).

So for these, I'd probably call it a "bump switch", maybe "left bump switch" and "right bump switch".
Side bumper sensor makes sense too but I think "Moustache bumper" definitely takes the cake!

Wow! Thanks very much. That'd fit perfectly. I'll propose it and let the client know that they need to confirm this.

Thanks again!

Industrial automation has some of the weirdest, and most interesting, things.
Did a stint in the 90s, automated weigh stations in explosive booths, ultrasonic canvas cutters, material flockers, carbon composition testing.
Fun times..
