Hi all,

My wife and I are moving over to NZ in about a month (from Perth, Western Australia) so I am also migrating over to geekzone from whirlpool :)

One thing I have noticed is that a vast majority of the posts in the Jobs forum are in Wellington, does this reflect the general availability of jobs or is it just a coincidence? We had thought that we would have the best luck finding work in Auckland, so that is where we will be landing, but if Wellington turns out to be better we might have to look at shifting.

Thanks,

Michael Heydon

What job boards are you looking at?

Wellington has the Government jobs, being the seat of power. Lots of web related work here in Wellington too. Auckland has a lot of the "head-office" corporate/enterprise types.

I always thought it was an even spread, guess it depends on your industry?

Coincidence I would say.

TradeMe jobs
is a good source of Auckland based jobs

I had mostly been looking at Seek, which seemed to be reasonably even between the two. The jobs forum here on geekzone is the one that seemed to be predominantly Wellington based.

I'm more of a sysadmin/networks/unix guy, so head office/corporate stuff would probably be a better fit than web stuff.

I'll keep an eye on TradeMe from now on too, thanks.

It's mostly Auckland/Wellington. There are only a few tech jobs in Hamilton. What particular area are you looking for?

I'm not too fussy really, I'm currently an systems and networks guy for a manufacturing company. I look after a mixture of Windows, Linux, BSD and AIX machines and a Cisco network, and I'm quite happy doing that but I wouldn't mind getting back into consulting either, it would be nice to see a bit more variety.

My wife will also be looking for work, she is currently working as a statistician for the fisheries department. She has degrees in maths and stats, biomedical science and molecular biology (and I think she has a minor in forensic biology), so with all that I figure that no matter where she goes *someone* will be happy to hire her.

I am arriving in Auckland on the 29th of March and she will be about a week behind me, we haven't organised accomodation or anything yet, we are pretty much just going to play it by ear.
