Hi there, my brother has Vista Home Basic on a Dell Laptop with no additional graphics card running on above graphics chip. Other specs - 512 gb ram (about to get my 512kb to make it 1g), 1.73ghz centrino dual core, 60gig (which actually only has 52 gig!) hdd @ 5400rpm. on windows experience index - lowest score is 2.0 on "graphics" and 3.1 on "gaming graphics".

the internet says it should run aero glass. he really wants to upgrade to home premium but i said better find out first!!

so - anyone manage to get aero glass with this built in video chipset?

also can someone explain - dual core does not mean 1.73ghz x2 correct? it means it has 2 cores that total 1.73ghz but somehow is faster than something with 1 core of the same "ghz"?

happy geeking!
cheers!

Yes you can get Aero with this chipset but you really do need 1GB of RAM.

For the HDD: 60,000,000,000 bytes is actually only 55.8GB
A 60GB drive would be 64,424,509,440 bytes

Also, dual core does mean two cores each running at 1.73Ghz

thanks mr brad, erm ... does

dual core @ 1.73 = 2 x single core 1.73

my idea is that the above does not hold true, but could you explain it better?

thanks for your time!

My mums laptop has that chipset i believe and its running Aero just fine.

Toshiba put Home Premium on it. Also i believe that the reason why hes missing 8gb of HD is for restore reasons.

Sorry for the double post but....

Lets put it this way, lets say you want to play a game. One chipset can be dedicated to the game while the other runs whats going on in the background.

You basicly have two processors in the one computer.

Does that make sense?

Although you have two cores running at 1.73Ghz you will not see twice the performance of a single core 1.73Ghz.

You will likely see 30-60% increase depending on what you are doing.

Wikipedia should explain it a bit better than I can http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-core

Also as Evinta has said above, you can assign programs to run on different cores which helps to balance load better

cool thanks guys *action of bowing/kowtow*! understand it now - that it's quite complex yet simple! erm one final question - there isn't a patch to download in vista for multicore (there is a patch in xp - which explains why my slow computer in xp suddenly sprung to life when i installed vista) or anyway of tweaking/"optimising" this thing?

Vista is already optimised for multi-core so there are no patches per se. But I'm sure you could find something on google about more tweaks
