Got an HP Envy DV6-7301AX, I want to do a clean install of win8.1 but that's not possible because the machine was shipped with win8 and they keys are different. Had to clean install win8 from oem media and all went well, it activates automatically with the key stored in UEFI bios.  Now updates are refusing to install, and this is a clean install with only the drivers loaded.  The updates download no problem, about 96 of them and they start installing initially, machine reboots after 96 installed through the windows update, after a reboot it configures windows and reboots several times, eventually it stops and reverts changes.  It gets stuck on reverting changes and sits there, a force reboot doesn't work either.  Any ideas about this?  Is this a fault in a particular update?  I tried clean installing a second time, and didn't load any drivers this time, got exactly the same problem again on doing the windows updates.

No idea. Maybe try the create media option of the 8.1 updated install from the store.

Even if that fails, at least you won't need to keep running the download time after time during the investigation.

Looks like Microsoft has given up on the dog eh ... they really want people to migrate to Macs and then buy Windows 9?

Huh?

The majority of consumer devices sold operate with the OS license they are sold with, UEFI just streamlines reinstall for the majority of users.

If you're a power user installing a different license you can bypass it easily enough.

If you're referring to the update issue, software is written by humans all software has bugs... doesn't matter if it's Microsoft, Apple, Sun, Adobe eventually you're encounter an issue.

Yeah create 8.1 install media (usb) and use a pid.txt (mentioned in my earlier post) to use your other key/license.

If updates still fail after that contact Microsoft's support so they can go through the process of working out what's wrong.

Ok heres what I ended up doing, I recovered the key from the uefi bios and then got hold of 8.1 media.  Installed 8.1 and used one of Microsofts generic product keys published on their website and these are easy enough to find using google.  The key I used was for "core" since im using 8.1 and not 8.1 pro, the generic key simply allows you to install the os, it wont let you activate and you have 30days after installation to activate using a proper key.  With 8.1 media you cant just use a key for 8, it wont accept it during the install process, hence the need to use a generic key to finish the install.  After the install of 8.1 it will however accept a key for 8, and that's what I did, it activated no problems.  The updates all installed no problems too, so I dont know why the updates refused to install on 8 ?  However problems is solved now, and I have a clean install of 8.1.

Good to know.
