Some thoughts on sub 1500 laptop running win 7, prefer to pick up in store from one of the big stores, i.e Harvey Norman, Noel Lemmings etc.

My advice is to avoid anything HP. I purchased a Toshiba 18 months ago to have a Windows Machine and it has run faultlessly, have a bit of crapware to get rid of but not too much.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

What do you want it for? The purpose makes a big difference to what is suggested. If it's always going to be carried around then lightweight, small size and excellent battery life would be more important than fast processor, lots of memory, massive hard disk and big screen, all of which consume more power.

Why Win 7? Win 8 makes better use of modern hardware particularly if you have $1,500 to spend.

I have had no problems that support avoiding HP. At home we have HP/Compaq, Lenovo, Toshiba, and Samsung laptops and I've helped hundreds of people to buy their PCs, many of which are HP. If anything, I would recommend HP slightly more than Toshiba because support is usually easier.

Bear in mind that you usually get what you pay for and most people have to accept that there are trade-offs to be made. If you buy cheap consumer class devices then they tend to be less reliable than more expensive business class devices. For myself, I prefer to buy 2-3 year old second-hand high-end laptops because they are more reliable, relatively cheap, and any issues with them are widely understood.

HP/Compaq consumer stuff is pretty average, but so is most consumer stuff. The ProBook/EliteBooks are fine.

Over heating is the main issue with HP kit a Google search should soon back that up. I was a HP user (wife worked there) however post Compaq merger their quality tanked especially in the consumer lines. Enterprise is a bit better however.

You've find it virtually impossible to find a Win7 consumer category laptop - everything in the consumer categories is 8.1

Why do you want Win7? 8.1 is superior in every way.

This is true, only Win7 Pro is available now. There are still cheapish Win7 options available(Tosihba ): have a look at PB Tech
Nothing wrong with HP btw. All the brands put out occasional duds .

Personal choice, do not want to get in to a debate on pros and cons of win 7 or or win 8, just looking at options for laptops running win 7, thanks

Most business machines come with licenses for both as if you're in a corporate environment there are many reasons why you'll want to ensure consistency.

You will find issues with most brands if you search hard enough. My ProBook 15" doesn't overheat and i've never had an issue, its 6 months old and shipped with Win 7

if you have $500 more or wait anohter month get a lenovo x1 carbon. it has option for win 7 and weighs no more than a feather and .... i want one!

Probooks arn't really enterprise level anymore (they were a couple of years back). Now they're the high end consumer level (read: crap).
Their whole brand stack got kinda shuffled down a level. Now the elitebook is about where the probook was. Even then I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft barge pole.
