My folks (primarily my father) has decided he'd like a tablet rather than me repairing/replacing his old desktop PC.

Budget is to $500.

Is it worth getting him something like a Refurbished iPad Air Wi-Fi 16GB for $400 from Apple, or is the next iOS release gonna kill it ? :-p

He only does email, Youtube and browse.

Any suggestions ? :)

Cheers

Get an iPad that has at least 2GB RAM. That's all I can say.

Although I had an iPad Air before, it was very good.

Ideally buy them an iPad Pro 12.9 32GB - very cheap on trademe (well, they're not selling, so you "could" get them for about the same price as the 9.7 Pro)

Oops didn't read your budget ... Air is fine, it's very capable.

I would go for at least the Air 2. There is quite a big price bump up to the pro version, where the only real benefit is that it allows you to use a stylus. The Air 2 is not laggy at all.  The Air maybe fine, however it is running the same A7 chip as the iphone 5s, which is now into it's 4th year. So it is an old tablet. So it may or may not get ios11 with the next 10 months, but that could be it.

I think most manufacturers have given up on android Tablets.

A iPad just does it all pretty much. And very simple to use
