Hi

I have an old Compaq Presario F500 laptop, AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology processor.  Currently 1 Gb memory.  I'm wondering if I can double that, to make it a bit faster, as a back up machine.

Pclinuxos Openbox installed.

Thanks

RAM let's you do more at the same time and adds an illusion of speed by allowing more apps to run from memory instead of the hard drive. Better off replacing the drive with an SSD if possible as that will feel like a much bigger performance boost overall, for both apps and data.

"Maximum Memory: 2GB"

Go to the web page of most Big Name RAM Brands and they have lookup tools to show whats compatible . Some HP's can be fussy with RAM .
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/presario-f500-series

Also, do a youtube search to see if its easy to do the RAM upgrade. At worst you might have to do a complete strip down (motherboard removal)  , but usually RAM is easy to change .

Thats a 10year old , low spec laptop. Honestly its not worth spending $ on. I bought an i5 , 2Mb RAM laptop for $120 .
Unless you can get some used compatible RAM really cheap.

As with 1101's post, probably not worth it.

Ask around the geeks, and you'll probably find a newer laptop for the same price as RAM/SSD or even one for free with a few marks/dings on it ;) I've had two i5 laptops given to me in the past couple of months, both from companies that had upgraded. Gave one to the youngest and kept the other for myself.
