My dad is approaching 80 and we're encouraging him to write down all his interesting stories as a veterinarian for 40 years. At this stage he only has an old iPad 2 that admirably still functions but is very slow.

Basically he will only ever write, sketch, check websites and email. I thought maybe a surface go with keyboard and pen would be good but maybe the screen is a bit small. It's a shame the keyboard and pens are so expensive for surface pro because pbtech have the entry level surface pro 7 for $1100

For something around $1500 or less what should I consider?

Also, it makes no sense buying them Ms office when there must be an app that more suited to being simple text and drawings and keeping it simple. Any thoughts on what application would be good to show him how to use?

I would suggest to avoid the latest surface pro x given the switch to ARM processors and they now emulate x86 32bit apps with very questionable results(bugs, lag etc).

Buy a mid priced Lenovo / HP / Dell in a store. He doesn't need a $1500 computer, he probably needs something easy with a screen with big letters (from experience).

Why try and reinvent the wheel here?

Just give him a new iPad. He already knows how to use it and to be perfectly honest they're totally fine as laptop replacements especially for the elderly. Just get him a keyboard to go with it.

This.

My father is a similar age and has a Windows based laptop, and he is constantly having to get a technician to come out and deal with all the weird maintenance issues. Something simple like an iPad would save him a world of pain but I think he is scared to move to something different from what he is used to.

Thank you all for your thoughts. The point about him already being familiar with his iPad is a very valid one. I don't think he'd enjoy the transition to windows 10 very much... and if he's not enjoying it, he won't use it and it negates the point of getting it for him.

On this - I see dicksmith.co.nz has the OG iPad pro 12.9" for $1100 (vs $1700 for the third gen out now).  Given that my dad doesn't need the upgrade in internal horsepower, and it's mostly the bigger screen he'd like it for, would this be a good option? How does the gen 1 iPad pro stack up today?  If it has a nice screen, works with a pencil and keyboard then he would be happy.

The iPad air 3 is also very nice - but again the screen is only "okay" for older eyes, I'd say?

There are a few on Trademe for less - this one as an example.

Gives you room to buy the Apple Pencil, case, keyboard etc :)

Thank you, I'll keep an eye on trademe. However the version you linked is the 10.5" version, same as the iPad air size.... and it's used.  Price isn't as much of a concern as ease of use and reliability.

As someone that's using a gen 1 12.9" in 2019, would you think this is a good deal?

Or pbtech have a gen 2 12.9" (but only 64gb) for $1150

i also highly recommend you find a keyboard case using the smart connect. don't use bluetooth that's pain in the butt. there were 2 options - the LG case or the apple case. both will work fine and has pros and cons. the LG case is very smooth but cumbersome and breaks easily. the apple one appears harder to type at first but you get used to it and it's bullet proof. the apple case also puts the ipad nearer to you so that you don't put any strain on an 80 year old shoulder when using the apple pencil with the keyboard. the other way to use the pencil is lie the ipad flat on the table. in short get the apple keyboard.
