Does anyone have a recently new DV5 latop with an integrated TV Tuner?
I am interested getting my self one for X'mas and was wondering what other people thought of the product.
Is it decent? Quality of picture? EPG? Software? Setting up?
Cheers

Was planning to make a post with this exact same question!  Does it work with DVB-T?  Noone seems to be able to give me a straight answer.. I tried to have a look at one in Noel Leeming on display but had people hawking over me..  Frown  I did some research and it seems to use the Avermedia 316 chipset, which is possibly made by Phillips' child company NXP..but no idea on its performance or what it is capable of.

Haha must be a nice looking present this christmas.
I have done some reasearch and HP say that it is an DVB-T and Analog Tuner.
Even though DVB-T is the terrestrial service, does that mean you could pick up the Freeview service in HD?
Thanks

Freeview HD = Freeview DVB-T.  The problem is Freeview in NZ uses the H.264 codec which may or may not be supported with the tuner in the HP DV5.  From what I understand its a software issue though if it doesn't work in NZ rather than a hardware issue.Smile

If the drivers are DBA compliant then yes, it should work with software such as GB-PVR, Media Portal or DVBViewer.. As to whether any included software works you would really have to ask HP.

You can guarantee that there won't be any included EPG since there is no PC software that does NZ's MHEG5 yet.

sbiddle do you mean BDA compliant?  The driver for the DV5T is available here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-61728-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=my%C0%88=en&os=2093&product=3769075

How can you tell if it is BDA (or DBA?) compliant?  I extracted out the driver from the above installer and ended up with the following files:

AVerBDA6x_x64_HP.inf
averbda716x_x64.cat
AVerBDA716x_x64.sys
AVermedia MCE Encoder x64 V84 Setup silent.exe
CoSetup_x64.ax
InstallDriver.exe
MV716x_x64.ax
RemoveDriver.exe

So how can I figure out if this driver is BDA compliant without trying it out? and also if it works with DVB-T NZ?  Smile

Looking through the driver files there are lots of references to BDA.  I've also found out the chipset used on the TV Tuner is a NXP SAA7160 (see http://www.nxp.com/acrobat_download/datasheets/SAA7160_1.pdf).  My conclusion from all of this is that it should work with NZ TV, including DVB-T (with the right program e.g. DVBViewer).

That's great.  So we now need someone with a DV5 to confirm this :)

I've got a DV7-1003tx, that has exactly the same chip - so far any attempts to recieve digital using dvbviewer or MediaPortal have resulted in completely no signal/no strength in any of the NZ frequency range.

I've checked the Freeview map, and my location in Kilbirnie, Wellington should 'very likely' recieve signal OK, and it picks up analgoue signal OK using both the desktop and roof antennae.

I'll try one more attempt using the house UHF antenna before I get in touch with HP and make sure it's not a hardware fault

It comes with WMC and HP Quickplay.

As someone has mentioned elsewhere, WMC doesn't use the codecs to decode the Freeview HD signal. I don't know about the HP Quickplay.

Tried again with the house antenna, this time got a low signal (40% or so) & no quality. So not a fault with my DVB-T card, i don't think. I think my UHF ariel is pointing the wrong direction

No picture whatsoever, signal not strong enough I suppose for MediaPortal to warrant saving the channel
