I have a Toshiba L55-c5392 Bought 05.08.16 which is falling apart and will need replacing soon it's still working well.  So would I need another i7 for same performance? Mainly used for general browsing.

Intel Core i7 6700HQ @ 2.60GHz 41 °C Sky lake 14nm Technology

16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)

i5 is probably good enough for general browsing, or an similar spec AMD. I like HP Probooks as reliable and good value, though Surface Pro are quieter.

a current i5 will give you better performance than your i7.

Yep if you are happy with the level of CPU performance from your current notebook, getting something new with the i5-1135G7 will outperform yours by a little in most areas, and the onboard graphics (assuming you don't get something with a dedicated card) is a big step up too.

Shows you the progress - what pretty much the top tier notebook CPU at the time is now outperformed by a mid range chip available in notebooks that probably cost less than half what you would have paid for the Tosh.

Something like that is a decent (cheaper) all round notebook for normal home use. You can of course get something better spec or business grade if you prefer.
