Hi,

A friend just rang asking for advice on a replacement for her laptop which at first I thought was dead dead.

However it seems its just the battery that is dying and it still runs ok with the power cord plugged in.

Am I right in thinking that it could keep going like his for quite some time, even after the battery itself is dead dead??

Yep. My kid has been using an ancient lappy that has zero battery life now for years.

Has she goggled the model number and battery. Might still be able to buy replacement.

My 7 Yr old acer is running win8. 1 and I was able to source a replacement battery last year.

Recently ordered a replacement battery for an old laptop - it was useable as long as it plugged into the mains supply.

New battery delivered within two days and the laptop now is mobile again.

Batteries have a shelf life. If you do get another don't accept something that's old stock and expect it to last as long as the original.

Looks like you are lucky that the battery is user replaceable unlike most modern laptops where you have to strip them down  to change them or send off to a service center.

On that note. Has anyone ever had a battery serviced or replaced. We’ve got a perfectly good MacBook Air from 2013 that just needs a charger after 30-40 mins and some patience

I ordered and paid for a replacement battery for my Dell XPS. In November. They still haven't come and installed it

That's a 30 minute DIY job. Unscrew some screws, replace the battery, do some screws up.

So my friend has looked into a replacement battery for her HP laptop.

I dont know what model it is, but she tells me the battery is out of stock from whomever she asked about that.

She thought she had to find an alternative system in just a few weeks, but I felt sure laptops didnt require a chargeable battery to run from AC.

Thanks for the confirmation, as I was most of the way towards forgetting that snippet of knowledge.

'Some' HP's, including quite old ones are subject to a Battery Recall notice.

Suggest confirming via their website, nothing to lose

I've got an ancient Dell in a drawer where the battery is physically removable. Still powers on when plugged in, even if the battery isn't physically present. Looks a bit odd though.
