So I'm selling my HP Laptop to get one a tad more portable to take around more often as I'm on the move a lot I'm looking at either the

Sony Vaio TZ-11.1($2500) / newer: TT-11.1"($3600)
or the Z-13.1"($2499)

The TZ is the older version of TT & same size, hence cheaper
The Z is the same generation as TT but is 13.1" and has faster cpu etc

So I'm wondering what you guys reckon would be the best option here?

I have been looking for a Vaio recently too!

I would say stay away from the TZ as it has over-heating problems and is a tad out-of-date.  The processor isn't all that great either.  Having said all that, if you need a portable laptop without needing the grunt, the TZ is a wonderful option.  I personally find the screen a bit too small.

The TT looks great and very portable.  The processor is better than the TZ but it is designed for lightwork (word processing / internet).  Battery life is excellent.  A good buy despite its price.

I have been eyeing the Z for a long time and recently Sony has come out with second generation models - bigger hard drives and more RAM; plus on the premium model, a blu-ray writer too!  I love the 13.1" screen.  Perfect for viewing images, videos and webpages.  If I had to choose, I would go for the Z - the price you pay is comparable to the specs you get (best of the best).

By the way, the newest Zs (3GB RAM, 320GB hard drive) are selling for $2999, where can you get it for $2499?

Have a look at the numbers - the one above is a 16.

The second generation ones  are 26 and 27 eg. VGNZ26(or 27).

Where are you looking to purchase one?  Also, how will you be using it?  That will determine the model to purchase.

Sony Style, Sony.co.nz or from Noel Leeming (with NL, you can even put it on interest-free!)  I know DSE can bring them in too.

The advantage of buying directly from Sony is that you get an extra year's warranty, valued at around $250.

Processor speed (although I don't think you can tell from the naked eye when you use it) and the extra RAM and hard drive capacity.

Na I compared the specs the Processor speed is the same

$500 seems a bit much for a bigger hard drive & 1gb of ram...

Yep my bad, the processor speed is the same.

A good chunk of the $500 premium is mainly due to the extra 1GB of RAM, which is a DDR3, vs. the standard DDR2.  DDR3 RAM is not widely used in notebooks at the present moment and thus costs an arm and a leg.

I think I will end up getting the Z with blu-ray.  However, right now trying to convince myself that it is OK to spend over $4, haha.

I am thinking I could also use my laptop as a blu-ray dvd player for home entertainment, saving me $400 on a standalone blu-ray player.  All about future-proofing.
