hello!
im currently looking into buying a dell inspiron 6000 laptop. you'll have to forgive me- im a bit computer-dense, but am i right in thinking i can only have 'broadband' internet? its only intended for home use, and probably wont be used as portable very often. is broadband only needed for portable/ wireless use?

You can use any Internet connection - or no connection at all. It is up to you. Broadband is just te name of fast Internet connections, like the ones you have with cable modem or ADSL.

The term applies when you compare the speeds you can achieve with these technologies when comparing with the dial-up, the one where you use a standard phone line connected to your computer.

I think the original question is not which type of Internet access the poster should use, but if that specific type is mandatory...

I agree, though, that broadband will give much more space for other experiences.
