You don't need to pay for drivers - HP is very good at having those available on their site for free. I think it's a hardware problem more than a driver problem.

+1, you should never have to pay for drivers.  You purchased the device so the drivers are free.  It would be advisable to try get your money back for the other software you purchased if at all possible.

Below is a link to  the HP website where you can download drivers (if any exist for a DVD drive)
Just select you model number from the list and away you go.

The other thing to try is uninstall the DVD drive and let windows find it again. You can uninstall it from Device manager.  Restart your computer after uninstalling it.

the natural question that follows is - does this driver robot come laden with hidden spyware type stuff. make sure you also have antivirus and antispyware loaded ...

(pardon the side track but thought it was important - esp in the long run, on such a state-of-the-art system)

Well i probably have the solution your after. Its not a driver issue, the part of your registry that contains information of your dvd drive has become corrupted..
Simply downlad this file here
unzip it, then double click the cdgone.reg file, it will be asked to be merged into your registry, click ok to this. Restart the machine and you should be right.
